Bend it like Frazetta

These are some old ink drawing I made. I was gathering them to apply for a job and I thought why not post them, right? I think almost all of them are like a year old.

(I switched to a new computer and I'm having a scanner compatibility issue. Not that you will care...)

I remeber by that time I wasn't almost drawing at all. I didn't have a theme or a motive that I could think of to use even for practice and that was holding me back. Then this friend of mine came, and she gave me a couple of Frank Frazetta books and that really helped me. So whenever I faced the blank sheet and felt paralyzed because I didn't know what to draw, I would turn to these Frazzetta books and use them as a source of "inspiration".

Estos son algunos dibujos en tinta viejos que hice. Los estaba juntando para postularme para un encargo y pense que bien podría postearlos acá.

Creo que casi todos tienen más o menos un año de antigüedad.

(No es que les vaya a importar, pero cambié la computadora hace poco y estoy teniendo unos problemitas de compatibilidad con mi scanner.)

Recuerdo que en ese momento casi no dibujaba. No se me ocurría sobre que dibujar y eso me tenía medio paralizado. En ese momento una amiga mía me regaló un par de libros de Frank Frazetta y eso me hizo muy bien: siempre que no sabía que dibujar, me ponía a ver esos libros y los usaba como fuente de "inspiración".

Choose your own Cthulu

Right now I'm working on several illustration, many of them will probaly never see the light of day. This one is the skecth of a Cthulu illustration that I'm making as a birthday gift (also because he moved in with his girlfriend) for a friend. I was trying to find the right Cthulu, so I asked my girlfriend which one of the sketches she liked better. The conversation went something as follows:

She: -What is it?

Me: - Cthulu is supposed to be a primal being, a embodiment of all that is horrible. The sight of Cthulu alone is too much for a sane person to manage.

She: -Aw, but the squids are so cute!

Me: -Dammit, woman! They're not supposed to be cute. That's Cthulu!

Estoy trabajando en varias ilustraciones a la vez, muchas de las cuales posiblemente nunca verán la luz. Este es el boceto de un dibujo de Cthulu que estoy haciendo como regalo de cumpleaños (y también de mudanza) para un amigo. Estoy tratando de encontrar el Cthulu correcto para el dibujo, así que le pedí a mi novia que me dijera cual le gustaba más. La conversación fue algo parecido a esto:

Ella: -¿Quién es?

Yo: -Es Cthulu. Es un ser primigenio que personifica el horror. La sola visión de Cthulu es más de lo que una persona cuerda es capaz de soportar.

Ella: -Ay... ¡pero son tan lindos los pulpitos que dibujaste!

Yo: -¡La puta madre! ¡No se supone que sea lindo! ¡Es Cthulu!

In this opportunity, our guest will be Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Father of all the Turks. One of the greatest statesmen of the 20th century.

Por la presente declaro inaugurada una nueva serie de posteos que poblarán este blog que se tratará de retratos de figuras históricas que me parezcan admirables por algún motivo (aunque esto último podría cambiar en el que yo lo decida y sin previo aviso). La selección va a ser completamente arbitraria tanto en términos de sujeto como de orden.

En esta oportunidad, recibimos a Mustafá Kemal Atatürk, Padre de todos los turcos. Uno de los grandes estadistas del siglo XX.

Sometime in 2012.

This is a drawing I made some months ago. It's the Marvel superhero the Silver Surfer in case you don't know. An atypical comic character because of its tragic nature. I'm not so happy with the drawing of the figure itself actually but I really enjoyed drawing that exploding sun in the back. Also I think it was one of the first times I used sprayed paint in a drawing and I remember being quite happy with the results.

I think I was reading the John Buscema period at the time (as your attorney I would advide you to get your hands on the number 4 in wich the Silver Surfer battles Thor. Buscema is genius. Plain and simple). Along with Wally Wood, they are my two of my favourites from the classic age.

Este es un dibujo que hice algunos meses atrás. Es el superhéroe de la Marvel, el Silver Surfer en caso que no lo veas. Un personaje de historietas muy atípico debido a su sentido trágico. No me gusta tanto la figura en sí misma, de hecho, pero disfrute mucho dibujar ese sol explotando en el fondo. También creo que fue una de las primeras veces que usé pintura rociada en un dibujo y recuerdo haber estado bastante contento con los resultados.

Por ese momento estaba leyendo la época de John buscema en el personaje (les recomiendo mucho el número 4 en que el Silver Surfer se pelea con Thor, es sencillamente impresionante). Creo que junto con Wally Wood, son mis dos dibujantes clásicos preferidos.
