Bend it like Frazetta

These are some old ink drawing I made. I was gathering them to apply for a job and I thought why not post them, right? I think almost all of them are like a year old.

(I switched to a new computer and I'm having a scanner compatibility issue. Not that you will care...)

I remeber by that time I wasn't almost drawing at all. I didn't have a theme or a motive that I could think of to use even for practice and that was holding me back. Then this friend of mine came, and she gave me a couple of Frank Frazetta books and that really helped me. So whenever I faced the blank sheet and felt paralyzed because I didn't know what to draw, I would turn to these Frazzetta books and use them as a source of "inspiration".

Estos son algunos dibujos en tinta viejos que hice. Los estaba juntando para postularme para un encargo y pense que bien podría postearlos acá.

Creo que casi todos tienen más o menos un año de antigüedad.

(No es que les vaya a importar, pero cambié la computadora hace poco y estoy teniendo unos problemitas de compatibilidad con mi scanner.)

Recuerdo que en ese momento casi no dibujaba. No se me ocurría sobre que dibujar y eso me tenía medio paralizado. En ese momento una amiga mía me regaló un par de libros de Frank Frazetta y eso me hizo muy bien: siempre que no sabía que dibujar, me ponía a ver esos libros y los usaba como fuente de "inspiración".

Art course in Buenos Aires

Hello. I'm not sure if you know this but I work in Sótano Blanco Art School located in Buenos Aires and we are putting together the first drawing course entirely in english and taught by yours truly.

It will be aimed at people curious about art, as we will go through basics of drawing, artists that happen to be in Buenos Aires and want to hang out (the school is located at the heart of the very traditional neighbourhood of San Telmo and is a very active place) or local artists that may want to use art as a mean to connect with people from other places.

In the future we may also have drawing bike tours to iconic places in the city, we are currently working on this.

(In case you're wondering: yes the course will contemplate the possibility of you not staying in Buenos Aires for long.)

Hola. No se si saben esto pero con la gente de la escuela de arte Sótano Blanco, estamos armando el primer curso dictado por un servidor totalmente en inglés.

Estará apuntado a curiosos del dibujo, ya que la idea es arrancar desde lo básico, artistas que esten de paso por Buenos Aires y quieran un lugar donde pasar el tiempo (la escuela está localizada en el corazón del tradicional barrio de San Telmo y es un lugar muy animado) o artistas locales que deseen usar el dibujo como medio para relacionarse con artistas de otros lugares.

La idea es que eventualmente tendremos tours artísticos a lugares icónicos de Buenos Aires en bicicleta (estamos trabajando en eso).

Tour d'Art

Something I have been working on for a few weeks (i mean not the drawing but "the thing" it was made for). I'll be telling more about it in the next few days hopefully.

"Is that a bicycle in your head?"

Algo en lo que estoy trabajando hace un par de semanas. No el dibujo, sino "la cosa" `para la que fue hecho. Con suerte estaré contando novedades al respecto en los próximos días.

Carlos Nine, a local artist that I really like, usually  speaks about how he picks up the doodles he does on notebooks and papers to work on them. I think for some reason the line that you achieve on those kind of drawings seems to be looser and that is hard to reproduce when you want to pick it up. I tried to do that with this doodle I did on a notebook at the office but I failed, so I ended up just tracing it.

This is the original doodle I traced:

I actually think some of the linework got lost in translation. But moreover, I'm happy with the result so I'll try again next time.

Carlos Nine, un artista al que realmente admiro, solía hablar sobre como levanta garabatos que hace en blocs y papeles para trabajarlos. Por alguna razón la línea que uno logra ahí es mucho más suelta y eso es difícil de reproducir cuando uno trata de llevar el dibujo al soporte final. Eso intenté hacer con este garabato que hice en un cuderno cuando estaba en el trabajo, pero fracase, así que finalmente solamente lo calqué.Justo arriba está el garabato original. Creo que algo del trabajo de línea se perdió durante el paso, pero mayormente estoy contento con el resultado. Seguramente lo volveré a intentar en el futuro.
