Choose your own Cthulu

Right now I'm working on several illustration, many of them will probaly never see the light of day. This one is the skecth of a Cthulu illustration that I'm making as a birthday gift (also because he moved in with his girlfriend) for a friend. I was trying to find the right Cthulu, so I asked my girlfriend which one of the sketches she liked better. The conversation went something as follows:

She: -What is it?

Me: - Cthulu is supposed to be a primal being, a embodiment of all that is horrible. The sight of Cthulu alone is too much for a sane person to manage.

She: -Aw, but the squids are so cute!

Me: -Dammit, woman! They're not supposed to be cute. That's Cthulu!

Estoy trabajando en varias ilustraciones a la vez, muchas de las cuales posiblemente nunca verán la luz. Este es el boceto de un dibujo de Cthulu que estoy haciendo como regalo de cumpleaños (y también de mudanza) para un amigo. Estoy tratando de encontrar el Cthulu correcto para el dibujo, así que le pedí a mi novia que me dijera cual le gustaba más. La conversación fue algo parecido a esto:

Ella: -¿Quién es?

Yo: -Es Cthulu. Es un ser primigenio que personifica el horror. La sola visión de Cthulu es más de lo que una persona cuerda es capaz de soportar.

Ella: -Ay... ¡pero son tan lindos los pulpitos que dibujaste!

Yo: -¡La puta madre! ¡No se supone que sea lindo! ¡Es Cthulu!

Bored at work series #1: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

I hereby inaugurate a new series of posts thatwill revolve around portraits of historical figures that I admire for one reason or another. The selection will be completely arbitrary in terms of both subject and order.

In this opportunity, our guest will be Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Father of all the Turks. One of the greatest statesmen of the 20th century.

Por la presente declaro inaugurada una nueva serie de posteos que poblarán este blog que se tratará de retratos de figuras históricas que me parezcan admirables por algún motivo (aunque esto último podría cambiar en el que yo lo decida y sin previo aviso). La selección va a ser completamente arbitraria tanto en términos de sujeto como de orden.

En esta oportunidad, recibimos a Mustafá Kemal Atatürk, Padre de todos los turcos. Uno de los grandes estadistas del siglo XX.

Hello, there.
This is a quick sketch I made as a gift for a couple of friends that are getting married this weekend. The way that I approached this was that I wanted to get something done, quick, in a few hours. I made a quick doodle that I liked in a notebook and picked it up from there.

I think sometimes that kind of deadlines help in terms that you are not allowed to get stuck if you want to get the job done. It is a good exercise, you should try it. Anyway. I can't get over the fact that I'm not happy with the girl's face. It's not wrong, but it is not the way I had envisioned it. I like his face though. And I feel re-doing the drawing would be an equivalent of cheating. I guess one of the things you have to learn is to cope with the results of your work.

Hola.
Este es un boceto rápido que hice como regalo para una pareja de amigos que se casan este fin de semana. Quería hacer algo que pudiera terminar rápido, en pocas horas. Hice un garabato en un block de notas que me gusto y lo levanté de ahí.

Creo que a veces ese tipo de límites ayudan en cuanto a que uno no se puede permitir trabarse y tiene que terminar cosas. Es un buen ejercicio, deberían intentarlo.

En fin, no logro superar el hecho de que no estoy contento con la cara de la mujer. No es que este mal, es que no es la manera en que me la imaginé. Me gusta la cara del hombre, igual. Siento que ahora rehacer el dibujo sería casi como hacer trampa. Calculo que una de las cosas que uno tiene que aprender es a lidiar con los resultados de lo que uno produce.

Carlos Nine, a local artist that I really like, usually  speaks about how he picks up the doodles he does on notebooks and papers to work on them. I think for some reason the line that you achieve on those kind of drawings seems to be looser and that is hard to reproduce when you want to pick it up. I tried to do that with this doodle I did on a notebook at the office but I failed, so I ended up just tracing it.

This is the original doodle I traced:

I actually think some of the linework got lost in translation. But moreover, I'm happy with the result so I'll try again next time.

Carlos Nine, un artista al que realmente admiro, solía hablar sobre como levanta garabatos que hace en blocs y papeles para trabajarlos. Por alguna razón la línea que uno logra ahí es mucho más suelta y eso es difícil de reproducir cuando uno trata de llevar el dibujo al soporte final. Eso intenté hacer con este garabato que hice en un cuderno cuando estaba en el trabajo, pero fracase, así que finalmente solamente lo calqué.Justo arriba está el garabato original. Creo que algo del trabajo de línea se perdió durante el paso, pero mayormente estoy contento con el resultado. Seguramente lo volveré a intentar en el futuro.
